3D Canvas™
Amabilis
http://www.amabilis.com/products.htm
Freeware
Windows 95, 98 or 2000

3D Canvas is a freeware real-time 3D modeling and animation tool that incorporates an intuitive drag-and-drop approach to 3D modeling.
Complex models can be constructed from simple 3D primitives, or created using 3D Canvas' Object Building Tools. Modeling tools are provided to deform, sculpt, and paint 3D objects.
Creating an animated scene is as simple as positioning the objects within your scene for each point in time in your animation. 3D Canvas will ensure that the resulting animation runs smoothly. No complicated scene timelines are required. Your animation can be stepped through a frame at a time, viewed in real-time, or recorded to a Video (AVI) file so that you can distribute your creation.

Tool roll-up groups allow you to customize the 3D Canvas interface so that only those items you use most frequently are visible. And if you need access to a less frequently used feature, the tool roll-up is always one click away.

The program supports the exporting and importing of 3D Studio (3DS), AutoCAD (DXF), DirectX, POVRay (POV), Truespace Objects (COB), and VRML (WRL) files.

Free Software

Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. It is written entirely in Java, and should be usable on any Java Virtual Machine which is compatible with JDK 1.1 or later.

The current version is 0.7, released January 15, 2001. Although it is still a ways from the 1.0 "release" version, it is progressing quickly, and is starting to look more and more like a "real" 3D program. It already includes a number of advanced features including a powerful raytracer, a flexible and easy to use mesh editor, powerful subdivision surface based modelling tools, and a graphical editor for creating procedural textures and volumetric materials.

Sergio Perani
http://www.behemot.com/
Freeware

Behemot Graphics Editor is a graphics program which allows to model and render 3D objects and scenes. It runs on Windows95/NT, Linux (intel and Power PC) and Mac; it can create and modify graphically b-rep, blob, NURBS models; object can be logically intersected or subtracted; text can be converted into solid objects using True Type fonts; polyline and NURBS curve can be edited and used to build rotation and sweep solids; objects can be linked using skeleton to easily move them . Complex animations and advanced modelling operations can be realized using scripts in Prolog language. Customizable vector fields allow to deform the model. The editor provides modeling in wireframe or shaded mode; it can export scenes in DXF or VRML format or animation in MPEG format, and import some DXF and 3DS files; it can render then with the raytracing engine.

MINOS
Régis Le Boité
http://www.le-boite.com/minos.htm
Freeware

MINOS makes it easy to design 3D parts and assemblies. The design methodology is based on defining simple geometric elements including lines, curves, and circles, and then linking them together to form contours. Fillets and chamfers can be added to a contour and are represented when the contour is used to produce a solid model. You create 3D shapes from contours by using simple operations such as:

Extruding contours along a line
Revolving contours about an axis
Sweeping contours along an arbitrary 3D path
You can combine the 3D shapes you create with standard primitive shapes like boxes, cylinders, and cones to form more complex geometry. Basic shape building and editing operations include cut, fuse, and common. With just a few simple commands, MINOS lets you create parts using shapes, and build complete assemblies using multiple parts.

PovChem
http://www.chemicalgraphics.com/PovChem/

A chemical visualization and illustration program with a new graphic interface. It takes molecules in the PDB format, lets you to set up a picture with fine control over details of the illustration - colors, atom and bond radii, view orientation, etc. It will even calculate and display hydrogen bonds. It then exports the picture in POV-Ray format, which allows you to render the image with a state-of-the-art raytracer, giving high-quality images at any resolution, for anything from web page thumbnails to full-size high-resolution images for journal covers, advertisements, posters, anything!

POV-Ray

Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000

The Persistence of Vision Ray-Tracer creates three-dimensional, photo-realistic images using a rendering technique called ray-tracing. It reads in a text file containing information describing the objects and lighting in a scene and generates an image of that scene from the view point of a camera also described in the text file. Ray-tracing is not a fast process by any means, but it produces very high quality images with realistic reflections, shading, perspective and other effects.

Stereo Photo-Metrology
http://stereo.sourceforge.net/

Stereo is software that allows the user to obtain dimensional data of 3D objects or surfaces within stereo photographs or images.
The user can take a number of photos of items of interest, from arbitrary camera positions. The photos can be loaded into Stereo , and calibrated using known x,y,z coordinates of a few points within the photos.

Once calibrated, Stereo knows the camera position for each photo. Points on items of interest can be then be manually located in each photo of a pair and surface data generated. It should be possible to describe a 3D object by taking many overlapping photos and using generated data in a previous pair to calibrate the next pair, and so on.

The surface model shown in the screenshot can be rotated about all axes using the mouse. Saling, and various shading options are available via the graphics window buttons.

Terragen
Matt Fairclough
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/
Freeware
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000

Terragen lets you generate photorealistic landscapes.
You can add mountains, valleys, water, sunlight, clouds, shadows, haze, and more. A variety of controllable parameters allow for extremely varied terrain shapes. Terrain sculpting tools can be used to "paint" the shape of the landscape, to position mountains and valleys, or make changes to random landscapes. Random terrain generation can be used to "fill in" realistic terrain over deliberately-positioned mountains and valleys.

It also allows extreme close-ups of landscape details, with the level of detail automatically adjusted.
